When other therapies have failed, we now have a more recent addition to the migraine medication arsenal. Vyepti is an FDA approved, prescription medication for chronic migraine in adults. It is a CGRP inhibitor used to prevent the onset of future migraine headaches. View manufacturer’s patient information >
How is it administered? Vyepti is given by intravenous infusion once every 3 months. The infusion will be administered by our Registered Nurse here at Integrative Headache Care. The entire procedure takes about an hour and you are able to drive or go back to work when it is completed.
Does it work right away? Yes, the onset of action is im med iate. Patients report some measure of relief within 24 – 48 hours, however individual responses do vary.
How long does it last? Vyepti is administered once every 12 weeks. As with monthly injected CGRP inhibitors, some patients experience a “wearing off” effect toward the end of that time. However, they are usually less intense and effectively managed with your short acting migraine rescue medications.
Is it safe? The most common side effects of Vyepti include a stuffy nose and scratchy throat. Of course, as with any medication, there is a risk of allergic reaction. Any type of severe reaction has been rare and there is no risk of allergic reaction to Vyepti that is greater than any other medication you would take. During your infusion, your Registered nurse will maintain close observation of your response status. It is administered slowly and should some reaction develop, the infusion can be discontinued immediately. Vyepti has not been studied with pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Is it covered by insurance? While individual insurance plans vary, the answer is usually yes. A prior authorization is obtained and you would be notified of your co-pay responsibility before the medication is delivered, allowing you to opt out if necessary. There is also a Vyepti Copay Assistance Program for commercially insured patients.
With that your copay would be reduced to as little as $5.00!
Got more questions? During your appointment with Dr. McCoy, appropriate medication options are discussed. If Vyepti is advisable for you she will take the time to answer all your questions.
